During an annual “I StarCraft” event in Seoul, South Korea two weeks ago, President of Blizzard Entertainment Mike Morhaime announced that the company is officially updating their famous real-time strategy game StarCraft: Brood War with a free standard edition as well as a HD remastered edition. Brood War was also incorporated into StarCraft 64. As of June 29, 2009, StarCraft and Brood War combined have sold more than eleven million copies. With Patch 1.18 released in April 2017, the expansion and its base game were made free to anyone with Battle.net. StarCraft: Brood War; May 20, 2017 at 9:00 AM MST Organized by StrawberrySpeedruns. StarCraft: Remastered had been released to the public earlier today and it costs $14.99 on Battle.net. As a reminder, the legacy StarCraft: Brood War had become free for everybody since patch 1.18 came out in April this year. So if you don’t feel like buying SC:R, you can still play the original SC — which by the way, are multiplayer compatible with each other!

An app for Android, called Winulator by Dan Aloni software, is being developed that lets users run Windows EXE/DLL files on ARM devices. So far, this app supports one game: Caesar III. StarCraft: Brood War patch v1.16.1 is currently in working progress and will be the next game to be supported. You can watch a short preview of the developer testing StarCraft on a tablet with full touch controls in the video below.
Winulator beta is available free in the Google Play Store, but note that StarCraft isn’t compatible yet. To support the developer, you can buy the paid version of Winulator.

Along with making the games free, Blizzard updated these perennial classics with a new 1.18 patch adding a few key features like the ability to toggle between fullscreen and windowed modes (Alt+Enter), an Observer mode, autosaves, improved UI layouts in Battle.net, improved compatibility with Windows 7, 8.1 and 10, and more. This shows a lot of confidence on Blizzard's part that people will still pay for the upgrade when the original games are free. As for the remake, this will include spruced up assets, resolution, audio, and story cinematics. You can see how it's evolved in the StarCraft Remastered trailer below.
Starcraft Brood War Dark Templar
The original StarCraft launched back in March 1998, at least in North America, while Brood War followed in November. Both were succeeded by StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty in 2010, that game's expansion Heart of the Swarm in 2013, then the final standalone chapter of the Starcraft 2 saga, Legacy of the Void, in 2015.
